17th May  Charity Open

The Charity Open in aid of RSPCC/Children First and MacMillan Cancer Support was played on an overcast day with heavy downpours. The gents’ section attracted a field of 110 players with visitor Bob Bishop, from Prestwick, winning with an excellent nett score of 65. Clearly Bob relishes playing the testing Machrihanish links having won the same competition last year. Runner up was local player Graham Husband with a fine nett score of 68. Graham pipped visitors Peter Watson and Stuart Dalziell, third and fourth respectively, by virtue of a better inward half on the count back, despite having a seven at the last hole.

In the scratch competition, reigning club champion, Oliver Armour, shot a superb 68 in the last game out. Out in an incredible 30 with 4 birdies in a row from the 6th, Oliver dropped shots at the par threes coming in with the strenghtening wind making the back nine a much stiffer test. Runner up was former, four times club champion, George MacMillan with a 72. Alan Ewing and Drumlemble youngster, Dean Ratcliff, returned 74’s for third and fourth place.

In the ladies’ section, club champion, Ann Gallacher, recorded a superb 83 less 10, nett 73 to win by a massive margin. Ann’s score would have been even better if she hadn’t gone out of bounds at the17th, during the heavy rain, and ran up an 8. The scratch winner was visitor Liz McLarty Jones with a 92.

Captain, David Rankin, handed over cheques for £500 each to Lorna Millar, MacMillan Cancer Support and Ailsa Colville, Children First. The proceeds on the day were enhanced by the raffle and both charities were most thankful to the host, Machrihanish Golf Club, for their continued support, to those who donated raffle prizes and to the players for their very generous support.
