Shepherds Cross 2011

2011_07_31 Sunday saw the return of the Shepherds Cross competition, which after the success of the previous years competition had a very healthy number of teams entered, all in pursuit of the main prizes and the various special prizes on the way round the courses.

The format was a 4 player team Texas Scramble, with the added twist of playing a front nine at the Machrihanish Golf Club, and a selection of holes at Machrihanish Dunes to make up a back nine. Conditions became increasingly windy as the day went on, however for the majority of the holes the players would have the wind assisting.

The early clubhouse leaders were Mundie & Co, consisting of Terry Mundie, Hector “Tuesday” McMurchy, and Robert McDonald, with Stewart Gillespie also drafted in to provide a calming influence to his higher handicap team mates. The team strategy was good and team Mundie returned a net score of 56.1 as they started the long nervous wait to see if anyone could better their efforts as the day progressed.

As the days play started to draw to a close another 56.1 was returned by K Anderson, Hector Thomson, Ivor Watson and Andrew Anderson, however after countback Mundie & Co held onto first place by the narrowest of margins.

Third place went to Iain Reid, Steven Dott, Jim McCallum and Barry Colville, finishing with a score of 56.4.

The special prizes at Machrihanish Golf Course were for nearest the pin at the 4th which was a team prize won by Scott MacBrayne. Andy Robertson won nearest the pin in 2 at the 7th, and Greg Watson won the longest drive at the 9th with a tee shot that was just short of the green.

On the Machrihanish Dunes, D Johnston won the team prize for nearest the pin in 2 at the 10th, and I McLeod won the individual nearest the pin at the 11th. The longest drive at the 16th went to J Robertson.

All participants finished the day off with a meal at the Machrihanish Clubhouse prior to the prize giving which was hosted by Vice Captain, John Biggins along with Machrihanish Dunes General manager, Janette Jansson who presented the prizes. Janette also thanked the players for taking part, along with Ian McLean and the Clubhouse staff for providing a welcome meal after the event.
