Welcome To The Machrihanish Golf Club

Machrihanish has become well known in the last few years mainly because of its exceptional first hole which requires the round's opening shot to carry the Atlantic. It is a tough start, particularly into a breeze.

The course is set in wonderful dunes in the small village of Machrihanish, which is situated on the western side of the remote Kintyre Peninsula, this is where the sky is big, the sunsets are dramatic and the air has been warmed by the Gulf Stream and its relative inaccessibility has saved it from becoming more commercialised.

It is a joy to play and, most of the time, very quiet, allowing the visitor to relish the ups and downs of the fairways and the tussle with undulating greens. There are also arresting views across to the islands of Jura and Islay, which provide a delightful backdrop on an idyllic summer's day with the firm Machrihanish turf underfoot, the majesty of the dunes, and wheeling seabirds providing the only sound.

It is a varied test for the competent golfer, the layout is not just a predictable nine out, and nine back. The classic links holes, apart from the 1st, are the 5th, another par four with its fairway like an elephant's graveyard, the 10th, a clever dogleg par five and the 15th, a one shotter with real difficulty if the elusive green is missed from the tee.

Captain's Message ( April 2015 )

As has been said by my predecessors, it is indeed an honour for me to be addressing all our members and visitors as Captain of The Machrihanish Golf Club for 2015.

Machrihanish Golf Club was established in 1876 and in 1878 its layout as we generally know it today was laid out by "Old Tom Morris" who famously stated and has since being often quoted, that the links "had been specifically designed by the Almighty for Playing Golf" and still presents members and visitors alike with a challenging and enjoyable round of golf.

I joined the Club in 1967 as a junior member and was one of a fourth generation of golfers from the era of Hector Thomson. Since then I have been a Country Member whilst working outside Campbeltown and in 1988 on my return to Campbeltown became a full member and have taken part in all the club-s competitions and the Saturday Winter League, in all weathers, good and bad.

I have also served twice on the committee mainly on the greens sub-committee and also as House Convenor.

The course has enjoyed many good years and it is with genuine hope that this year will follow that trend, it is fair to say that the weather has been rather ruthless these last three years, but we have always through the endeavours of our greens staff and committee presented the course in a good and testing condition and are confident of doing so again for the 2015 season.

In order to do so an initial programme to vibrate roll, solid tine, over-seed and brush the greens is presently underway, and efforts are now being made to repair some of the storm damage suffered by our "world acclaimed" first hole.

One change members will find incorporated into the course this year is a change in the stroke index of the 2 nd hole, Machrihanish and the 5 th hole Punchbowl, which have been changed in order, we hope, to present a fairer representation of the difficulty in playing the 5 th hole to that of playing the 2 nd .

The 2015 competitions are now underway and I am pleased to announce the following companies, The Ardshiel Hotel, Drumore Pine and Springbank Distillery are going to sponsor this year-s Am-Am on Saturday 23 rd May 2015.

I hope that the coming 2015 golf season is an enjoyable experience with many memorable moments for all our members and visitors.
